Calculus Remote from The Ohio State University

School Responsibilities

Each school wishing to participate must provide the following:

  1. Students
  2. Coordinating teacher
  3. Tech coordinator
  4. Agreement from the Principal and District Superintendent.
  5. Adequate computers with systems configured for the software and Internet connection.

Here are the specifics.

The Students

The students must meet the C&M prerequisites and gain admission to Ohio State through the Ohio State University Academy program, the OSU implementation of the Ohio Post Secondary Enrollment Option Program (PSEOP). We will send you more information together with applications material for each of your interested students. In rare cases, students interested in taking calculus this way do not have records which clearly support their admission to the Academy.

The Teacher

The coordinating teacher is not expected to be the teacher of the course. The only duties of the coordinating teachers are to be the school contact for the program, to administer the quizzes and exams we provide, and to intervene to keep the students on schedule should they fall behind. It is not even necessary for the coordinating teacher to be a math teacher. However, we do expect teachers to be familiar with the internet and to learn a little about the interactive text, Calculus&Mathematica.

The Tech Coordinator

The tech coordinator's responsibilities are to setup and maintain the computers, software, and Internet connection used for CROSU at their high school. We expect tech coordinators to be familiar with the learning environment we adhere to, and to become familiar with the technology we use. This includes an introduction to the use of the Internet and an introduction to the interactive text, Calculus&Mathematica.

The Principal

The school principal must agree to support the students' access to the computers and the connection to the Internet, and must support the coordinator's role in the program.

The School District

There are fiscal commitments surrounding the implementation of the program, including the purchase of textbooks, software, internet connections, and if students work toward concurrent high school and university credit, the payment of certain fees to the university. The office of the superintendent must agree to support the program.

The Technology

There are three aspects of technology the school is responsible for obtaining to become involved in CROSU. First, they must supply computers that meet or exceed our system requirements.  Second, the computers must be loaded with the software we require for the program. Finally, the school must provide a telephone the students can access to call the CROSU hotline for assistance from the CROSU mentors.

What To Do Next

If your school is interested in participating in CROSU and willing to abide by the above obligations, download an application, print it out, complete it, and send it to us.
