Calculus&Mathematica is offered remotely via the internet to interested students or current OSU students that meet these prerequisites.
Actually, there is no difference in the material of the courses. The same courses that are offered in the lab are offered through CROSU. What is different is that the students take the class via the internet with the help of Remote Calculus Mentors.
The lab classes are only offered at the main OSU campus in Columbus, Ohio. Here, during class time, C&M students work almost entirely in a computer lab staffed by faculty and graduate student lab instructors, and trained undergraduate student lab assistants that assist the students and discuss their work. The students work in groups, and the staff helps by using Socratic interventions when the student and group need it to help them proceed through the problems. The students then spend a good deal of time outside of class working, coming up with questions and comments for their instructors and group members, and developing their own ideas and explanations.
Calculus & Mathematica Remote at OSU recreates this setting in distance by giving students the opportunity to work on the lessons in groups or individually at their high school, branch campus or home. Remote students do not have a C&M instructor at their site, so they connect via the Internet to trained Remote Calculus Mentors and instructors who can help them build an understanding of the mathematics for themselves. The mentors also provide feedback on assignments for the students. These mentors are available to students at any time throughout the day, making it easy for students to "raise a hand" and ask questions via e-mail, AOL Instant Messenger or by exchanging notebooks. Remote high-school students also have a site-coordinator at their school that helps the students with technical and logistical aspects, such as faxing or mailing handwritten assignments to OSU.
If you would like to learn more about how the remote program works, take a few minutes and browse through the CROSU Manual.
